I hope you are well and that you're enjoying a couple of days off for the Holidays. Today I want to show a dress I completed just a few days ago, which is part of my '20 dresses project'.

As you may know, in this crazy project I was challenging myself to sew 20 dresses out of the same pattern in 2017!

So here is dress #14: the black satin evening gown.

I remember starting this dress back in January 2017, for an upcoming corporate event I had in February. I had tried it on with the sides pinned and it came out too big and loose. This and the fact that I thought that my fabric was plain and boring were enough to make me abandon the dress.

So it sat in a bag with all the pins still in it for almost a year, until I pulled it out last week to see if it was worth finishing it, and also make it the last dress of my '20 dresses project'. I don't know for you, but me I often need a little push to finish a sewing project; since I was having this Christmas gig on December 25th in a luxury hotel in the region, I thought it would be a perfect occasion to wear a simple and elegant evening dress!

Modifications to the pattern:

For this dress I had the idea of modifying the armholes and the neckline a little bit to give it more of an evening look. I raised and narrowed the neckline opening by 5/8'' compared to the original pattern, and I also took off quite a lot of the outer edge of the armhole to get a cutout effect. I drawed two new pattern pieces for the front and the back so I could use them again if I wanted to sew another bodice like that in the future. For the skirt panels, I reduced the flare and elongated the panels to floor length, simple as that!

Fabric and lining:

The outer fabric is a poly satin with a little stretch in it (bought locally at Fabricville). Usually I'm not big on synthetics, but I could tell that this satin is a quality one, it has substance and it drapes beautifully, and the shine is matte and subtle.

I could have been lazy and not line the dress as it looked pretty good without, but in my mind an evening gown has to be lined, it's not like a cotton dress. I just hangs better, and a lining helps minimize underwear lines. I had just a couple of days to complete the dress and no time to make a trip to the fabric store and buy Bemberg for the lining, so I searched my fabric stash and found a weightless silk charmeuse that was really well suited to my project.

So that gown is fully lined with silk (yes, that's the beauty of having an enormous fabric stash at home!) - it takes forever to complete but you're rewarded with a dress that feels delicious to wear and that drapes beautifully.

I would have liked to have more time to enjoy the process of sewing this gown, but I was going through the sewing steps with the only goal in mind of having a dress to wear on December 25th, I was not really having fun creating something. And with a floor length dress fully lined like that, you are dealing with approximatively 7-8 yards of slippery satin and silk charmeuse shifting all the time on the sewing table and the ironing board, so my patience was put to the test and yes, there was some cursing going on in the sewing room! :-)

J'espère que vous allez bien et que vous profitez de quelques jours de congé durant les Fêtes. Aujourd'hui, je vous montre une robe que j'ai complétée il y a quelques jours à peine, et qui fait partie de mon 'Projet 20 robes'.

Comme vous le savez, dans ce projet un peu fou je me suis mise au défi de coudre 20 robes à partir du même patron en 2017.

Voici donc la robe #14: la robe longue en satin noir

Je me rappelle avoir commencé cette robe en janvier 2017, pour un événement corporatif qui se déroulait en février. J'avais fait un premier essayage avec les côtés épinglés et la robe était trop grande. Cela, en plus du fait que j'ai dû avoir un coup de blue puisque je trouvais que ma robe était juste un amas de tissu noir ennuyant, ont été assez pour me faire abandonner le projet (pour cette robe en particulier, pas le défi).

L'amas de tissu (lire la robe) est resté dans un sac avec toutes les épingles dedans pendant pratiquement un an, jusqu'à ce que je la ressorte la semaine dernière pour voir si elle valait la peine d'être terminée et ainsi d'être la dernière robe du 'Projet 20 robes'. Je ne sais pas c'est comment pour vous, mais moi j'ai souvent besoin d'une petite poussée pour finir un projet abandonné; comme j'avais un engagement pour chanter le 25 décembre dans un hôtel luxueux de la région, je me suis dit que ça serait une occasion parfaite pour porter une robe du soir simple et élégante!

Modifications apportées au patron:

Pour cette robe, j'ai pensé modifier les emmanchures et l'encolure pour lui donner un aspect plus 'soirée'. J'ai remonté et rétréci l'encolure de 5/8' en comparaison avec le patron original, et j'ai aussi retranché pas mal au bord extérieur de l'emmanchure pour dégager l'épaule. J'ai dessiné 2 pièces de patron devant et dos pour pouvoir les utiliser à nouveau au besoin. Si vous voulez voir de quoi a l'air le dessin technique du patron, vous pouvez voir ici. Notez que la version #1 n'est pas une robe longue, elle va à mi-mollet.

Pour les panneaux de jupe, j'ai rétréci l'ampleur (ils sont très godés au départ) et je les ai allongés jusqu'au sol, aussi simple que cela!

Tissu et doublure:

Le tissu extérieur est un satin en poly légèrement extensible (acheté local, chez Fabricville). Habituellement je ne suis pas très matières synthétiques, mais ce satin m'avait séduite avec sa sustance, le drapé, et son reflet mat et subtil.

Un moment j'ai pensé être paresseuse et ne pas doubler la robe - elle tombait déjà pas mal sans doublure - mais dans ma tête une robe du soir se doit être doublée, ce n'est pas comme une petite robe en coton. Une doublure fait qu'elle tombe mieux, et minimise les marques de sous-vêtements ou de bas de nylon. Je n'avais que quelques jours pour compléter cette robe et pas vraiment le temps d'aller chercher de la doublure Bemberg en magasin, j'ai donc fouillé ma réserve de tissu et j'ai trouvé cette charmeuse de soie toute légère qui était parfaite.

La robe est donc entièrement doublée de soie (la beauté d'avoir une réserve de tissus à la maison!) - cela prend une éternité à coudre mais on est récompensée par une robe super agréable à porter avec un beau tombé.

J'aurais bien aimé avoir plus de temps pour apprécier le processus de couture de cette robe, mais j'avançais dans l'assemblage avec l'unique pensée en tête d'avoir une robe à me mettre le 25 décembre, je n'ai pas eu trop de plaisir à créer quelque chose. Et puis avec une robe longue comme ça, entièrement doublée, on joue avec environ 6-7 mètres de tissus qui s'amusent à glisser sur la table et sur la planche à repasser. Disons que ma patience a été mise à l'épreuve, et j'ai bien dû échapper quelques jurons. ;-)
