This is the muslin I made last week for the 1956 evening gown (Eva Dress pattern). The (vintage) size 14 (34-26-36) is pretty much like me, except that my waist is 27. I am surprisingly pleased with the fit of the muslin, it is not far from the truth (if such an expression exists in english!). Maybe a little snug at the waist, I'll probably have to give more ease in this area. The back is roughly pinned; it is not as smooth as it will be with the zipper. I will fine tune the fit in this area although it's hard to tell right now how the peau de soie will behave, and there also will be 2 layers of fabric (the bodice is lined with self fabric). The front is a bit too large under the bust drape (note the slight poofiness) and I'll  have to take in at the darts.

I had ordered some stretch dutchess silk satin from NY Center Fashion Fabrics about 2 weeks ago. Usually they ship in 24 hrs, but I received an email this Monday saying they were back order and they didn't know when they would receive their new stock. Although this could have been nerve racking (keep in mind the corporate event I need this dress for is THIS Saturday), I didn't panic. I think I like to live dangerously and solve problems! My B plan was to find some silk fabric in Montreal and have it shipped to Québec on the same day.  (I couldn't find 100% silk peau de soie in Québec aside from white or ivory). Luckily, Madeleine Soie et Laine in Montréal had just what I needed:  real black peau de soie (98 cm or 39'', 58 momme in weight) and my super dad shipped it to me by bus. I even had a C plan in case the B plan didn't work: sew the dress in some poly peau de soie, or buy doupioni silk. But, poly is just not the same; doupioni could have worked for this dress but the dress would have been longer to make (the skirt part would have been lined instead of just the bodice part since this silk is thin). I think the black peau de soie I found will be perfect for this dress; it has a heavy but supple drape and is not too shiny.

OK, now back to sewing: the next few days are entirely devoted to this dress!

Front of muslin - the length is perfect, but this is a raw hem; I'll have to add 5/8'' to turn a small hem/

Back of the muslin; I think it collapses a little bit since this is a single layer and it has no boning/

  9. I kind of like how the shadow of the blinds spills over your muslin...too bad you can't permanently imprint those shadows. It's kind of cool!
